I'm Kim Thi, a scientist, philosopher, medical writer and strategy consultant with a passion for learning, problem solving, and creating positive impact. Through this blog platform, I’m looking to share my learnings and experiences from the biotech/pharmaceutical industry while also connecting with like-minded individuals.
My journey started in a small town in the central highlands of Vietnam called Di Linh, Lam Dong where I grew up among the K’ho people. From an early age, I’ve always dreamt about going beyond my humble village to explore the vast world.
In 2010, I got a scholarship that allowed me to study at St. John’s College in Santa Fe, NM to pursue an unconventional liberal arts education centering around the Great Books Program. Those were critical years that have got me trained in deep thinking, philosophy of sciences, mathematics, and communications.
In 2012, I got diagnosed with Graves Diseases, and the incidence sparked my interest in learning about the immune system.
In 2014, I started the PhD training in Immunology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, conducting preclinical and clinical research to learn about the role of immune responses in various autoimmune and chronic inflammatory conditions. My PhD thesis was focused on various immune factors that contribute to the progression of chronic lung diseases such as Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPD). My research contributed to clinical trials to repurpose rituximab, plasma exchange and IVIG in IPF.
During my PhD (2014-2020), I was fascinated about the power of using data to advance medicine. I took several trainings and was involved in several bioinformatics and clinical informatics projects, which led me pursue my postdoc training in medical informatics at the Hugh Kaul Precision Medicine Institute in 2020.
During my postdoc, I was extremely fortunate to be mentored by some of the most wonderful and well-respected computer scientists in the world, Dr. Matthew Might and Dr. William Byrd, who were pioneers in the field of logic programming and who were developing an AI tool* to solve problems in precision medicine. I received invaluable hands-on training and learned the foundations of computer sciences and was able to apply what I learn to help patients with ultra-rare genetic disorders.
In 2022, while exploring alternative careers to academic research, I got a chance to learn about the wonderful world of medical affairs within the pharmaceutical industry and embarked on a career in communicating sciences to help improve patient care.
I find myself constantly learning—nurturing not only current knowledge about the pharmaceutical industry, the complex regulatory processes and competitive trends but also refining my soft skills such as teamwork and effective communication.
On a personal note, I’m currently based in Atlanta, GA, with my fiancée, and we're eagerly preparing for our wedding in Vietnam this May! I cherish staying connected to my roots and culture. We have a dog and a cat, who are wonderful beings that keep us joy. Additionally, I'm passionate about health, fitness, and dancing. I have a wonderful morning routine that empowers me to pursue my dreams and shape the life I desire.
*My post-doc projects was focusing on improving a logic reasoner tool called mediKanren. mediKanren was as part of an international and ambitious project funded by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) to develop a unified biomedical knowledge base to accelerate the pace of translational sciences.
